After maintaining their unbeaten record in Week 5, the Georgia Bulldogs delivered a commanding performance against the Auburn Tigers at Sanford Stadium.
Following the victory, Smart addressed the media during a postgame press conference with DJ Shockley and Fox 5 Atlanta. However, instead of focusing solely on the team’s success, Smart turned his attention to the fans, offering what many perceived as criticism.
As reported by Marca US, Smart told Fox 5 Atlanta, “Great victory for Georgia. It was hot out there today, and to be honest, I’m a little disappointed. I’m probably disappointed with our fans for the first time.” Smart noted that the crowd lacked the energy and noise typically expected at a home game, which he believed impacted the team’s home-field advantage.
He further elaborated, saying, “Our players have helmets and pads, and it’s hot out there, and they’re pushing, trying to have a home-field advantage like we’ve had when we’ve played against other teams, but I can’t get crowd noise.” Smart emphasized his disappointment, calling the fan support “disappointing” and urging fans to do a better job of backing the team. He added, “I know I’ve got to do a better job as a coach, but we need these fans to support us, and these players need them behind them.”
Smart’s remarks quickly spread on social media, with people on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) sharing their reactions to his postgame comments. His directness surprised many fans, while others debated whether the criticism was justified after such a decisive victory.
