MAX has reportedly canceled Mindy Kaling-led Velma series

In a now-deleted Instagram post, background artist Davey Cummings announced that Mindy Kaling’s Velma has been canceled (via Comicbook.com). The animated series, led by Kaling, will not continue following the release of its Halloween special.

Cummings confirmed that there will not be a Velma Season 3, which premiered on MAX in 2023 and ran for two seasons, concluding with the Halloween special titled “This Halloween Needs To Be More Special.” As of now, Warner Bros. and MAX have not released an official statement on the cancellation.

The Velma series, a reimagining of the classic Scooby-Doo characters, sparked controversy due to its drastic changes to the iconic figures. Notably, Scooby-Doo did not appear, and new plotlines and character dynamics were introduced. The show received mixed reviews, with criticism focusing on its humor and stereotypes. Despite the backlash, Velma managed to produce two seasons and a final special before its reported end.

The cancellation leaves several plotlines unresolved, including Fred’s fate after the spellbook influences him in the Halloween special and Velma’s complex relationships with the other characters. The Halloween special, which involved Velma battling an undead horde, appears to serve as the series finale.

Although Velma has concluded, fans of the Scooby-Doo franchise can look forward to a new series titled Go-Go Mystery Machine. This series will follow Shaggy and Scooby as they embark on adventures in Japan. The upcoming project marks the fifteenth series in the long-running franchise, continuing the legacy of Mystery Incorporated for future audiences.
