Moana 2 Star Auli’i Cravalho Teases Main Character’s Journey in Sequel

Moana 2 star Auli’i Cravalho opened up about what it was like reprising the titular character in the upcoming animated sequel, which is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 27.

What did Auli’i Cravalho say about Moana 2?

During a recent interview, Cravalho teased Moana’s “completely different journey” in the sequel, as she discusses growing up with her iconic character. In addition to returning for Moana 2, the Mean Girls star is also currently attached as an executive producer in Disney‘s highly-anticipated live-action remake of the 2016 animated movie.

“She’s growing. She is pushing herself now even further beyond the reef,” Cravalho said (via People). “The recording booth is truly my happy place, and [I’m grateful to] come back to this character that I know so well, but also take her on a completely different journey.”

Directed and written by David G. Derrick Jr., Moana 2 will feature the voices of Auliʻi Cravalho and Johnson, as they reprise their respective roles as Moana and Maui. The original was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. It was not only a commercial success with a gross of over $600 million, but it also earned positive reviews from critics and earned two Oscar nominations including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.

“The film reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers,” reads the official synopsis. “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
