Previously, it was reported that Sky Deutschland removed its original commissioning, per Deadline. There was quiet uncertainty about Season 5 due to funding issues. However, at that time, Liv Lisa Fries, who plays Charlotte, confirmed that renewal would happen without Sky and the filming would begin by the end of the year. She also assured that the finances are being taken care of. Now, X-Filme Creative Pool has solidified this report by confirming the upcoming season and it being the final one. In the statement, their bosses expressed gratitude towards partners ARD and Beta Film for doing the final season.

“We would like to thank our partners at ARD and Beta Film for having the courage and trust to bring Babylon Berlin to a real conclusion together with us. Over the many years of this production, the historical past and present have repeatedly intertwined in sometimes frightening ways. We are incredibly grateful that we can now end this cycle with 1933 and show what the end of a democracy looked like. We very much hope that the present won’t repeat the new season.” 

The new season will take place during 1933, showcasing the Nazi rule, and will consist of eight episodes. Henk Handlogten, Achim von Borries, and Tom Tykwer are set to return and direct.
