Gary Oldman Open to Joining Harry Potter Series But Not as Sirius Black

Gary Oldman portrayed Sirius Black in the Harry Potter franchise, but recently joked that he was now old enough to return to the upcoming HBO reboot of the series in a much different role.

Speaking to Indiewire, Oldman was asked about the potential possibility of turning up in the series. The actor said that he believes Warner Bros. Discovery is looking for entirely new people in its cast and joked that he would soon be old enough to appear as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore instead.

“I love Sirius,” Oldman said of the character he played in the movies. “He wasn’t in it enough. He turned up and then he went through the veil. I would bet my money that they will get a whole new cast of people. Maybe in a few years, I could do Dumbledore.”

What do we know about the HBO Harry Potter series?

Oldman starred as Sirius Black in 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, 2007’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and in 2011’s finale film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. In the films, Black is a character that is originally perceived to be a villain, but is later revealed to be the godfather of Harry Potter, and becomes a mainstay throughout the latter half of films.

Currently, casting is underway for the planned HBO reboot of the Harry Potter series. An ongoing open casting call is looking for children who are residents of the UK and Ireland. The announcement also seemingly revealed the project’s current production start date, as one of the casting call’s requirements is that actors must be around aged 9 to 11 in April 2025. Chosen young actors will officially be succeeding Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, who were also cast at a very young age to star in the blockbuster franchise.
