Before Dianne Feinstein became a U.S. senator for California, she was the president of San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors in 1978. When Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone were both shot and assassinated, she was the one responsible for announcing the news to reporters. Feinstein then immediately became the mayor for the city.

As noted by CBS News, Feinstein was the one who discovered Milk’s dead body in city hall, which is in part why she was in a state of shock. She stated that the perpetrator, Supervisor Dan White, told her on the phone that he didn’t feel Milk was going to reappoint him.
