CM Punk Reflects on His Time with the Straight Edge Society
Former WWE World Champion CM Punk has led two factions in his career: The Nexus and the infamous Straight Edge Society. The Straight Edge Society was a heel faction in WWE in 2009. Led by CM Punk, who was himself straight-edge, the faction promoted a lifestyle without alcohol, tobacco, and drugs.
The faction consisted of CM Punk, Joey Mercury, Luke Gallows, and Serena Deeb. Although the faction had a relatively short lifespan, it left a notable mark on WWE & the fans. The faction lasted until 2010 when members’ getting released led to its disbandment. He subsequently joined The Nexus in late 2010.
The faction made a significant impact with its charismatic promos and engaging storylines. It often clashed with top WWE stars like Rey Mysterio and The Big Show. The Straight Edge Society wreaked havoc on SmackDown from 2009 to 2010. Interestingly, a few weeks ago, Punk reunited with his former faction member, Luke Gallows.
Punk recently appeared at San Diego Comic-Con, participating in the WWE Mattel Panel discussion alongside Sam Roberts and Zoey Stark. During a recent interview, Punk reflected on his time with the Straight Edge Society.
CM Punk says leading the Straight Edge Society was a special time in his career
In his interview with Ringside Collectibles, CM Punk reflected on his experience leading the Straight Edge Society. He described it as a highly significant period in his career. He also mentioned that while he isn’t currently planning to lead another faction, he remains open to the possibility.
He stated, “That was a special time in my career. You always hear people say, like, ‘Oh, my character is me turned up to 11,’ and man, was that ever I turned up to 11? The preachy, you take everything that is stereotypical about the straight edge and the whole movement and the subculture, and you get to play that as a bad guy on television, and that was the time of my life. It was just so fun to be super preachy and trying to weave in a lot of religious tones, trying to force my stuff on other people. It was the ultimate bad guy. It was the time of my life. I’m not gonna say no (to if I’ll lead another faction or not) because you never say never.”
He continued, “I don’t see it happening in the foreseeable future, but you never know what’s gonna happen. That’s the cool thing about where we’re at as a company right now. Creatively speaking, this is the most fruitful, creative locker room that I think I’ve ever been in, where ideas aren’t ignored and shot down, and people are eager to share ideas. So, somebody someday could have a brilliant idea. Something that I have blinders on and can’t see, and I would be receptive to any of the ideas as long as they’re good.”
With Punk hinting at the possibility of a new faction in WWE, it will be interesting to see if this idea materializes into something significant.
