Burning Sun scandal documentary is available to watch on BBC’s official YouTube channel. The documentary revolves around the 2019 scandal and highlights a chat group of former popular K-pop idols Seungri (BIGBANG), Jung Joon-Young (Drug Restaurant), and Choi Jong-Soon (FT Island), among others. 

Titled Burning Sun: Exposing the Secret K-pop Chat Group, the documentary is made by BBC Eye, an award-winning investigation team of BBC World Service. Two South Korean reporters—Park Hyo-Sil and Kang Kyung-Yoon—came forward to tell their side of the story as they investigated the case. The duo shared the details of the chat group, where the singers talked about physically assaulting a woman. After Kyung-Yoon’s article led to Joon-Young’s arrest, more victims came forward to report their stories. Subsequently, Seungri’s famous midnight club, Burning Sun, was permanently closed.

As mentioned above, the Burning Sun scandal documentary, which was released on May 19, 2024, is available to watch online on the YouTube channel of BBC World Service. The official description reads, “This #BBCEye documentary tells the story of the female journalists who took on the task of investigating the secret chat groups of prominent K-pop stars – and paid a high personal price.”

The documentary featured the journalists’ experience regarding the aftermath of the Burning Sun scandal. They became the victim of cyberbullying and received threats. Reporter Park Hyo-Sil shared how she was harassed online by fans of the aforementioned K-pop idols.

“My husband was incredibly worried and told me not to go into the office, not to leave the house because it seemed so dangerous,” she added. “I was pregnant and I was in such shock. I was so mentally shattered that even going out of the house was difficult. After that, I had two miscarriages and now I am childless.”

Meanwhile, Kang Kyung-Yoon revealed that she also faced harassment campaigns against her. However, she concluded that she has “no regrets” covering the case.
