The animals can feel the danger, they are able to smell the danger and feel it. If they had the knowledge, perhaps they should have taken the scream, more for what it was; a warning.

These kind of movies that make snakes the bad guys are always just so laughable to me with how beyond wrong they are. And I know people will tell me that “of course it’s wrong, it’s a movie,” which is true, but if Jaws taught us anything, people will accept movies as fact way too quickly, and it just astounds me how movies portray snakes in such an evil and violent way, which will inhance people’s fears and lose their respect for the animal
