Fun Fact: The part where Leonidas said "THIS IS SPARTA!!" is actually ab-libbed by Gerald Butler because he wanted to tried it and it was so good, it was kept in the final product.

And thus, a legendary scene was born.

Fun fact. This is based on actual historical events. According to Herodotos Athens and Sparta both threw Darius' (the then Achaemenid emperor) messengers down a hole. However this would later be seen as a huge blunder, heralds, greek or not, were considered sacrosant and under the direct protection of the gods. To kill a herald was thus a direct attack on the gods. Believing that they had angered the gods the desperate Spartans would later send two volunteers to Xerxes and begged him to execute them to appease the gods. Xerxes however refused and sent the Spartans home. It wasn't until Athens killed two Spartan messengers that they believed the gods had been appeased.

And this is how a meme was born.
