28 Years Later Update: Filming Wraps on Cillian Murphy Sequel

An update has reported that filming on 28 Years Later, the much-anticipated sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, has wrapped. Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle, who directed the first movie and served as an executive producer on the second, returned to helm 28 Years Later. Cillian Murphy, who received the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as the titular character in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, has also returned to the post-apocalyptic film series, reprising his role as Jim from the first movie.

Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later wraps production

On Monday, July 29, it was reported that filming had wrapped for Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later. Production for the movie began in May 2024, with filming reportedly taking place in various parts of the UK, including London; Cheddar Gorge, Somerset; Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne & Wear; Northumberland; Kielder Forest, Hexham; and Priddy, Somerset.

Alongside Boyle and Murphy, Alex Garland, the screenwriter of the first film and another executive producer for the second, returned to co-write the script for 28 Years Later along with Boyle.

Conversations about the third film have been around since 2007, but the project kept getting delayed. The film officially went into development in January 2024. Alongside Murphy, the cast of 28 Years Later includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, and Edvin Ryding. The film is set to release in US theaters on June 20, 2025.

There are already plans to extend the franchise beyond 28 Years Later, with the film slated to serve as the first entry in a trilogy. Garland is the screenwriter and producer of the next two films as well, though Boyle is not slated to helm either of the proposed sequels. Nia DaCosta (Candyman, The Marvels) has been confirmed as the director of the second movie, which is reportedly titled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple. Deadline reported in April 2024 that 28 Years Later and The Bone Temple would be filmed back-to-back. Given that the production for the former has now concluded, the filming for the next sequel will likely begin soon.
