global release of ukiyo-e woodblock prints featuring a Puella Magi Madoka Magica
illustration by Shaft. This product will be available on AKIHABARA PREMIUM
COLLECTION, an EC platform known for bringing together Akihabara’s otaku culture
and the Japanese passion for craftsmanship, from 12:00 (JST) on July 27, 2024.

■The first Ukiyo-e woodblock print for Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Madoka Kaname, the protagonist of the anime, wishes to free all magical girls from the
tragic cycle of hope turning into despair that transforms them into witches and becomes
a magical girl herself.
Her wish is so powerful, it causes her to transform into a new rule of the universe called
the Law of Cycles. The Law of Cycles cannot be observed or interfered with by anyone.
When a magical girl is about to fall and become a witch, it appears and guides them to
a higher plane.
We have created an ukiyo-e woodblock print featuring an illustration of Ultimate
Madoka by Shaft, the animation studio behind Puella Magi Madoka Magica, titled “The
Law of Cycles.” Please enjoy this ukiyo-e, which is meticulously handcrafted by
artisans down to the finest detail.

Engraving
The creation process for an Ukiyo-e woodblock print begins by dividing the design into
different colors and engraving each block individually. This involves an incredibly
intricate process, where even a one-millimeter deviation can significantly impact the
entire image. Achieving perfectly aligned engravings is a testament to the artisan’s
years of dedicated training.

Printing
The next step is printing each color using traditional inks. This also demands great skill
from the artisan, as even a one-millimeter misalignment or insufficient pressure can
cause the entire image to shift.

Decoration
The Puella Magi Madoka Magica ukiyo-e woodblock prints are decorated with
Swarovski crystals.
