What Happened to Gaten Matarazzo? Disease & Health Explained
Fans are curious about Gaten Matarazzo‘s health condition and what his disease is. Matarazzo is best known for his role as the lovable and intelligent but socially awkward Dustin Henderson in the Duffer Brothers’ Stranger Things. However, many are unfamiliar with his personal life, which includes details like his health and disease.
So what is Gaten Matarazzo’s disease? Here is all you need to know.
What disease does Gaten Matarazzo have?
Gaten Matarazzo is suffering from Cleidocranial Dysplasia (CCD), according to Hollywood Life.
This is a rare disease that affects a person’s teeth and bones. It also affects their skull, face, spine, collarbone, and legs. According to the website Hopkins Medicine, people suffering from CCD typically have a different bone structure. Their bones may also be fragile compared to others. In addition, people with CCD may not have collar bones.
Matarazzo has been suffering from Cleidocranial Dysplasia since birth. In an interview with The Doctors, the Stranger Things star explained that he was born without collar bones. He also revealed that when he told of his rare disease to the Duffer Brothers, they decided to incorporate Matarazzo’s real-life disease into his character Dustin.
Additionally, he was also asked if other kids on the Stranger Things set bullied him because of his condition, to which Matarazzo replied that they did not.
Furthermore, in an interview with Health Insight, Matarazzo revealed that every acting role he signed up for was because of his CCD. He also added that his condition was mild. He said his CCD was what basically kickstarted his acting career. However, he expressed his wishes to eventually evolve from this situation and get roles not because of his condition alone.
Recently, Matarazzo revealed via Instagram that he has had multiple surgeries for his illness. In 2020, he mentioned having had his fourth surgery, and, in the captions of his post, provided users with a link to visit the site to learn more about Cleidocranial Dysplasia.
Two days later, he put up another post expressing his belief that the fifth surgery he had would be his last one. Here, he also offered a more detailed description of his disease, thanked fans for their prayers, and again shared the link, which they can visit to learn more about his illness.
