Is Amazon Prime Video’s Mirzapur Web Series Based On a True Story?

Mirzapur season 3 premiered on Prime Video on July 5, continuing to captivate audiences and build on its dedicated fanbase. Despite some initial disappointments, the third season has now officially become the most-watched show ever on Prime Video in India. With an unexpected ending, the intense drama has kept fans on the edge of their seats, eager to see what happens next in this crime saga. Amidst this anticipation, viewers’ curiosity about Mirzapur’s real story and origins intensified.

What is the real story of Amazon Prime Video’s Mirzapur series?

While the Mirzapur franchise continues to captivate audiences with its gripping storyline, it is essential to note that its narrative is far away from the real life of Mirzapur town. The series is a creative collaboration of Puneet Krishna, Vineet Krishna, and Karan Anshuman. Set against the backdrop of the Purvanchal region, the storyline revolves around the throne of Mirzapur. Additionally, the show delves deeper into the power struggles, vengeance, and chaos that define the fictional town of Mirzapur.

In an earlier interview, co-writer Anshuman revealed their research process for the Mirzapur series. He said, “We traveled far and wide in Uttar Pradesh, its interiors, particularly the Purvanchal area. Learned new things, like how desi kattas [locally produced guns] are manufactured. We met retired gangsters, if you can call them that. We came across many stories and legends.

“Guddu [Ali Fazal] and Bablu’s [Vikrant Massey] stories were based on two real boys who rode a bike and went around terrorizing the town. We researched the drug trade. But because the world is so fictionalized and dramatized, we let our imagination run wild,” he added.

Speaking about Guddu’s character inspiration, Anshuman continued, “In one of our trips, we met this wannabe bodybuilder. We were taken aback by the effort and commitment these guys put in to win a local contest. Unlike the creme de la creme of Bombay’s actors, they do not have access to the right training and so they make compromises with their body. Guddu is inspired by this guy.”

Overall, the Mirzapur series is purely fictional and not related to any true events. Currently, Mirzapur season 3 running on Amazon Prime Video.
