Captain America 4 Sabra Changes Detailed for Controversial Character

The first trailer for Captain America: Brave New World is now out, and with it comes additional information on potential Sabra changes made to the character.

In a blog post on Marvel’s official website announcing the trailer, more details on those involved were shared. Among those was the introduction of actress Shira Haas, who joins the series as Ruth Bat-Seraph. Ruth Bat-Seraph is better known for her superhero alias Sabra in the world of Marvel Comics.

In the comics, Sabra is a mutant who was a member of the Mossad, the Israeli secret service.

For Brave New World, however, the character has been changed a bit. Now, Marvel describes the character as a “former Black Widow, Ruth is now a high-ranking U.S. government official who has the trust of President Ross.”

While the reason for the exact change is unknown, there was backlash to the news that Ruth Bat-Seraph would be in the movie from the beginning, with many of the issues stemming from the Palestine-Israel conflicts that have taken place for years. Shortly after the casting was announced, Marvel Studios also said that the character would have a “new approach” to her, even if she was taken from the world of Marvel Comics.

“While our characters and stories are inspired by the comics,” the studio said in a statement to Variety at the time. They are always freshly imagined for the screen and today’s audience, and the filmmakers are taking a new approach with the character Sabra who was first introduced in the comics over 40 years ago.”

The movie is directed by Julius Onah, who previously made 2015’s The Girl Is in Trouble, 2018’s The Cloverfield Paradox, and 2019’s Luce. The movie was written by Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, and Matthew Orton.

Along with Mackie and Ford, the Marvel Studios movie stars Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres/Falcon, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns/Leader, Shira Haas as Ruth/Sabra, and Liv Tyler as Betty Ross.

Xosha Roquemore, Seth Rollins, and Rose Salazar are also reported to be playing undisclosed roles in the upcoming movie.
