What Happened to Sam Reigel? Illness & Health Update

Fans are curious about Sam Reigel’s illness and whether or not he has cancer. Reigel is known for his prolific voice-acting work and his main character in Critical Role, where he plays Dungeons & Dragons alongside other prominent voice actors. Thus, it is not surprising that fans are concerned about his health situation.

So, what illness has Sam Reigel been battling? Here’s your answer.

What illness is Sam Reigel suffering from?

Sam Reigel was suffering from tonsil cancer. He had the cancer removed from his body.

Riegel revealed his diagnosis in a new video uploaded on Critical Role’s official X (formerly Twitter) account and YouTube channel. Here, the Critical Role actor mentioned that he had visited a hospital earlier this year after learning he could not taste sweet food. He originally thought it was COVID but then ruled out that possibility after testing negative.

Riegel then said his doctor asked him to consult an otolaryngologist (a nose, mouth, and throat doctor), who diagnosed him with Oropharyngeal carcinoma or tonsil cancer. Riegel then underwent surgery (via The Gamer).

The Critical Role star then mentioned that he spent four days at a hospital where he ingested food through a feeding tube and re-learn how to “speak and swallow.” Following this, he then underwent six weeks of radiation treatment, because of which he lost 20 pounds, could not taste or eat much food, and received radiation burns.

Reigel then said that he was on his way to a full recovery and said he shared his story to make people aware that tonsil cancer, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), is preventable and that it appears in 90% of men and 80% of women. He also urged people to get an HPV vaccine to ensure they do not get tonsil cancer.

The actor then concluded his video by thanking every person who helped him fight tonsil cancer and expressing his missed participation in Critical Role.
