Shrek 5 Release Date Announced for Animated DreamWorks Sequel

A release date for Shrek 5 has been announced.

On X, the official DreamWorks Animation posted a short video revealing the logo for Shrek 5. “The All-Star Returns,” the tagline for the movie reads, which is a nod to Smash Mouth’s All Star, a song that played during the beginning of the first Shrek movie.

When is Shrek 5’s release date?

Shrek 5 will be released in United States theaters on July 1, 2026.

According to the X post, Mike Myers will return to voice the titular ogre in Shrek 5. Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are also returning to voice their respective Donkey and Fiona characters.

Eddie Murphy previously told Collider that he believed Shrek 5 would be released in 2025. During the same time, Murphy also confirmed that a Donkey spin-off movie was in the works, though a release date has not yet been set.

“We started doing Shrek 4 or [Shrek] 5 months ago,” Murphy said at the time. “I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [movie].”

The first Shrek movie was released in 2001. It was a massive hit for DreamWorks Pictures, bringing in approximately $492.2 million at the global box office off an estimated $60 million budget.

Shrek was followed by 2004’s Shrek 2, 2007’s Shrek the Third, and 2010’s Shrek Forever After. There have also been two spin-off movies featuring Antonio Banderas’ Puss in Boots character, including 2011’s Puss in Boots and 2022’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

There have additionally been a number of Shrek television specials and short films, including 2003’s Shrek 4-D, 2007’s Shrek the Halls, 2010’s Scared Shrekless, 2023’s Puss in Boots: The Trident, and more.
