Crunchyroll Gets Rid of Comments in New Update

In a recent policy update, Crunchyroll disabled the comments section from its streaming platform. The new update not only turned off comments on each anime but also removed the option to comment under Crunchyroll‘s news articles. The update caused a commotion online since no formal declaration was made before its implementation. This prompted users to question the streaming platform’s policy revision and discuss the latest feature’s drawbacks.

Stating the reason for its comments and reviews sections policy update, Crunchyroll stated, “At Crunchyroll, we prioritize creating a safe and respectful community environment. To maintain this standard, we are removing all existing user-generated content, including comments, across all our platforms and experiences.” The statement further read, “The user ratings system will, however, remain allowing you to express your opinions through star ratings.”

Several surprised and frustrated users took to social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit to discuss the new Crunchyroll comments update. Users believe this decision was made after the online chaos caused by the premiere of the BL anime Twilight Out of Focus on Crunchyroll.

Calling the comments section a “cesspool,” users discussed how the series received offensive reviews and comments following the anime’s release. Viewers speculate that the use of derogatory remarks and trolling in comments on the platform is another major reason why Crunchyroll took the drastic step.

While some users expressed relief and praised Crunchyroll for removing the opportunity for users to make hateful comments, others remained skeptical about the decision. However, a major concern that users seem to have is the removal of timestamps under various anime. The timestamps helped guide future viewers to when the episodes began.

Although Crunchyroll has not yet addressed the reason for the latest platform update, a formal statement should ease the commotion. Given the atmosphere of confusion in the wake of the decision, users hope the issue will be clarified soon.
