What Happened to Coach Robert Saleh? New York Jets Firing Explained

The New York Jets have experienced an underwhelming start to the 2024 NFL season, recording just two victories in five matches so far. After winning two games on the trot, the Jets received an unexpected humbling at the hands of the Vikings in their latest fixture. As such, New York’s shoddy form has led to severe consequences, with head coach Robert Saleh’s firing being the most recent one. But what actually happened between Saleh and the Jets?

Here are all the available details regarding the veteran tactician’s ousting.

Why was Robert Saleh fired by the New York Jets?

Robert Saleh was reportedly fired from his New York Jets job due to the team’s poor run of form. Another suggested angle to his abrupt dismissal has to do with his supposed beef with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Team owner Woody Johnson confirmed Robert Saleh’s firing in an official statement, as reported by NBC News. “This morning, I informed Robert Saleh that he will no longer serve as Head Coach of the Jets. This was not an easy decision,” Johnson admitted. “But we are not where we should be given our expectations. I believe now is the best time for us to move in a different direction.”

Saleh was also reported to have fractured his relationship with Jets talisman Aaron Rodgers. Rumors of a dispute between the duo first surfaced following New York’s loss to Denver. Having conceded five false start penalties in the match, Saleh stated in a post-match conference that the illegal play could have resulted due to Rodgers’ dodgy pre-snap signals. The quarterback was later seen avoiding Saleh’s embrace in the Jets’ win over New England.

The former coordinator of the 49ers joined forces with New York in 2021 on an initial five-year contract. In his three years at the helm, the tactician registered an overall record of 20-26. Following Robert Saleh’s firing, defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has been named as the interim coach.

Now under new leadership, the New York Jets will be facing the Buffalo Bills in their sixth league match of the season.
