Sydney Sweeney & Amanda Seyfried to Star in Paul Feig’s The Housemaid
Lionsgate has tapped Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried to star in the planned movie adaptation of Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel The Housemaid, with Paul Feig set to direct.
The upcoming thriller will hail from Hidden Pictures and Feigco Entertainment and is set to be produced by Hidden Pictures’ Todd Lieberman and Feigco’s Feig and Laura Fischer. In addition to starring, both Sweeney and Seyfried will executive produce the feature alongside Alex Young and the book’s author, McFadden.
Feig will direct the film based on a screenplay by Rebecca Sonnenshine.
What is The Housemaid about?
McFadden’s The Housemaid has been on The New York Times Bestseller List for over a year and has sold over 3.6 million copies.
Per the film’s logline, The Housemaid will see Sweeney as Millie, “a struggling young woman who is relieved to get a fresh start as a housemaid to Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew, an upscale, wealthy couple.” However, she will soon learn that “the family’s secrets are far more dangerous than her own.”
“The Housemaid is a certified phenomenon with over a year on the New York Times Bestsellers list, millions of copies sold, and a place on numerous critics’ choice lists,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s co-president Erin Westerman.
Westerman added, “Part of the fun of the book was imagining the cast while we read it, and Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried are perfect for Millie and Nina – they’re both mysterious, nuanced, and incredibly skilled at becoming characters who don’t reveal everything right away. We’re thrilled to team them with Paul Feig, who we worked with on A Simple Favor and its upcoming sequel, and has a proven track record of developing stories with dynamic female leads.”
Best known for her portrayal of Cassie Howard in Euphoria, Sweeney has also starred in a handful of movies and television shows including Nocturne, Downfalls High, The Voyeurs, Night Teeth, The White Lotus, Anyone But You, Reality, and more.
Seyfriend, an award-winning actress, gained mainstream attention during her stint as Karen Smith in 2004’s teen comedy Mean Girls. She went on to star in other acclaimed projects (from the small to big screen) including Big Love, Mamma Mia!, Mank, Les Misérables, While We’re Young, First Reformed, and The Dropout, among others.
Meanwhile, Feig is the filmmaker behind Bridesmaids, The Heat, Spy, Ghostbusters, A Simple Favor, Last Christmas, and Jackpot!.
