The Rings of Power: How Are Elendil & Aragorn Related

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power explores the rich history of Tolkien’s Middle Earth. With the introduction of Elendil, fans are now wondering how he is related to Aragorn. Fans came to know and love the King of Gondor from the original book series by Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings trilogy by Peter Jackson. They have now developed a renewed interest in the history of the character.

So, without further ado, here is everything you need to know about the relationship between Aragorn and Elendil.

Yes, Elendil is related to Aragorn from the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. Aragorn is the rightful heir of Gondor via Isildur’s line and the 38th great-grandson of Elendil.

The original trilogy had mentioned several times that Aragorn was the heir of Isildur and the true King of Gondor. This Isildur is the oldest son of Elendil. Elendil and his two sons, Isildur and Anárion, led the survivors of the Downfall of Númenor, to the shores of Middle Earth. The two brothers eventually went on to rule the sister kingdoms Gondor and Arnor.

It is important to note that Isildur actually formed the line of kings in Arnor instead of Gondor. But since Aragorn, his direct descendant, was the only remaining blood of Elendil during the Third Age, people of the realm declared him true king of Gondor. After Sauron was defeated, Aragorn was crowned the High King of both Gondor and Arnor. This title had only been held twice in history, first by Elendil and next by Isildur.

Elendil was also mentioned in the Peter Jackson trilogy. He briefly appeared in The Fellowship of the Ring, during the Battle of the Last Alliance. In the movie, Elendil was killed by Sauron at the battlefield. It was Isildur who picked up the broken blade of Narsil and severed Sauron’s finger, which bore the One Ring. This is the same Narsil that once belonged to Elendil that was reforged to create the Anduril. In The Return of the King, Aragorn wields Andruil, symbolizing that Gondor finally had its true king on its throne.
