How WWE Is Reacting to Netflix’s Vince McMahon Series?

The highly anticipated Netflix docuseries called Mr. McMahon, focusing on former WWE CEO Vince McMahon, is set to premiere next week. The six-part docuseries premieres on Netflix on September 25.

Vince McMahon’s upcoming Netflix docuseries explores his life and career. This six-part series took years to create and has faced controversy throughout its development. The docuseries explores the rise and fall of Vince McMahon and how he transformed WWE into a global juggernaut. However, it also addresses the darker side of McMahon’s journey.

Professional wrestling fans know that downfall of former chairmen began in 2022 when he abruptly retired from the WWE amid a scandal involving hush money payments. He made a surprising return to the promotion last year, but this brief comeback ended in early 2024.

A lawsuit by former employee Janel Grant alleging sexual misconduct forced McMahon to relinquish his board position and sell his remaining stocks. As the wrestling world eagerly awaits the premiere of Mr. McMahon, recent reports shed light on WWE’s backstage reactions to the upcoming series.

Backstage reactions to Vince McMahon’s documentary

Wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer recently discussed WWE’s backstage reactions to the upcoming Netflix documentary on Vince McMahon. On the Wrestling Observer, he noted that the director thoroughly covered every aspect of his story. According to Meltzer, this approach has led to negative feelings backstage in WWE. He shared that some WWE staff, even those supportive of McMahon, are unhappy with the documentary’s direction.

He said, “I can only say that the director who did it covered, with me, every single thing that I would expect someone to cover. There were no stones unturned. I know that there are people who are in WWE who are not happy with it. I don’t know how fair it is to Vince … but there are people there — these are pro-Vince people [who aren’t happy] but if it was a fair documentary, how could they be? We’ll see, but I am certain that the people who are really, really anti-Vince will not be happy [either].”

Moreover, recent reports suggest that former employee Janel Grant, who filed a lawsuit, was contacted for an interview. However, this interview ultimately did not come to fruition for the Netflix docuseries.
