Smile 2 Director Explains How Sequel Takes Curse in New Direction
The sinister grin will return in a deadly fashion in Smile 2. Despite learning about the details of the curse in Smile, director Parker Finn says the sequel will bring the Smile Entity in a new direction.
“With the mystery of the first one, I thought it was really fun that, now that the audience is familiar, it allows this new context, this new way to position the audience,” Finn said to Total Film. “They come in ahead of where some of the characters are. I wanted to see, ‘Can we use that to the film’s advantage?’”
“We had only sort of pulled back the corner of the rug to peek under,” Finn added, promising the sequel would surprise many people.
What to Expect in Smile 2?
Naomi Scott stars as Skye Riley, a pop star inflicted with the curse before heading out on a world tour.
“About to embark on a new world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events,” the official synopsis reads. “Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her dark past to regain control of her life before it spirals out of control.”
Besides Scott, Smile 2 stars Rosemarie DeWitt, Lukas Gage, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Peter Jacobson, Raúl Castillo, Dylan Gelula, and Ray Nicholson. Kyle Gallner reprises his role as Joel, the cursed police officer from Smile.
Finn writes, directs, and produces Smile 2. His first film, Smile, was a smash success for Paramount in 2022. Originally planned for a direct-to-streaming debut, the studio opted for a theatrical release in September 2022. Smile grossed over $217 million on a $17 million budget.
Additional producers on Smile 2 include Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Isaac Klausner, and Robert Salerno.
Smile 2 scares its way into theaters on October 18, 2024.
