What Is the Highest Score in Gymnastics for Women’s All-Around?
The question of what is the highest score in gymnastics for women’s all-around, and whether Simone Biles holds the record, is a tricky one. This is because the code of points, the table that judges use to give scores, changes every several years. The current 2022-2024 Code of Points (CoP) has radically changed the start values for various apparatuses, especially in reducing scores on vault, so overall all-around scores for WAG are relatively lower than those in the past. That said, people want to know what the top scores look like heading into the 2024 Paris Olympics. Here’s what the highest gymnastics score for WAG all-around is under the current 2024 system.
What is the highest gymnastics score in women’s all-around under the 2024 Code of Points?
Simone Biles holds the highest gymnastics score in women’s all-around with a 60.450 under the 2022-2024 Code of Points. She received this score during Day 1, or the preliminary round, of the 2024 U.S. Championships.
To break this down further, Biles received a 15.800 on vault, 14.650 on uneven bars, 14.800 on balance beam, and 15.200 on floor exercise. Much of this improvement in score is due to her vault, which received a score 0.5 higher than before because she did it without her coach near the mat. Any all-around score above a 60 in the current CoP is considered incredibly high, with most top gymnasts attempting to get a 56 or higher.
That said, this 60.450 is for a domestic championship, so some fans might not count this. If we look at international championships, we can look at the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships where Biles won the gold medal with a total of 58.399. At that event, Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade scored a 56.766 total for second place, slightly less than the 56.899 at the 2022 Worlds.
For perspective as far as how scores in WAG all-around have been lowered over the last decade, Biles scored a 62.416 at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Andrade got the bronze medal at this Olympics with a 58.732. Still, what’s important about scoring in gymnastics is that it’s all relative and about having a higher margin than your competitors. Whether Biles retires after the Paris Olympics or not, it’s important to keep this in mind for gymnastics competitions in the future.
