Constantine 2 Update: Writer Addresses R-Rated Sequel Possibility & More
After years of radio silence, the brains behind Constantine 2 are finally sharing substantial updates regarding its progress. The original movie, starring Keanu Reeves, was released in 2005 to lukewarm reviews. Nevertheless, it has since established a dedicated following, with demand for a sequel growing exponentially as time passes. As such, the creators have finally given a positive update about the development of Constantine 2.
Constantine 2 writer on script progress and R-rated sequel potential
In a recent interview, producer Akiva Goldsman revealed that he is currently working on a script for Constantine 2.
While talking to Collider, Goldsman shared updates regarding the progress of the sequel to Constantine. “It’s going fine,” he said. “I’m writing a script about Constantine 2. It’s good. I hope to have a script for my partners soon.”
The filmmaker also shed light on the possibility of the second installment being R-rated. Akiva Goldsman referred to a Keanu Reeves interview with Stephen Colbert and recalled the difficulties they faced while getting an R-rating for their film. He conveyed, “The movie we made, we thought was PG-13, and then it was R because of demons. So, everybody sort of felt like, “Gee, if it was going to be R, we might have dug a little more deeply into some of the stuff we were working with.”
Since then, the director of the original movie, Francis Lawrence, has also shared updates about his desire to make Constantine 2 “as R-rated as possible.” At the time of writing, it remains unknown if the second edition will be filmed in a manner that exceeds the PG-13 rating.
Why Constantine 2 took so long to get greenlit
Keanu Reeves initially took on the mantle of the fantastical character in 2005. While there has been an apparent demand from fans for a sequel, several obstacles have hindered the movie’s progress since. One of the major reasons that have delayed the second film has to do with the rights of the DC comics character.
While commenting on updates regarding Constantine 2, director Francis Lawrence had stated previously that he, Keanu Reeves, and Akiva Goldsman had wrangled relentlessly for rights for the superhuman detective, per CBR. The team has since succeeded in securing some control and is currently working to make the sequel a reality.
Updates concerning Constantine 2 received further delay due to the prominent WGA strikes in 2023. The film, being in the early stages of development, was consequently put on an indefinite hold. However, the script for the movie is currently being composed, and fans can expect more news in the foreseeable future.
