The only reason why this scene traumatized me was because they’re British. If they were American it wouldn’t even be scary.
Since the kid didn't know it was a horror movie, it's funny to imagine the stuff they said for him to do like "Okay, so just make a scared face and cover your eyes"

I first saw this scene in the Twister movie and was totally freaked out and intrigued.
An absolute masterpiece of horror. Nothing scares like the unknown, the feeling that something is about to happen but we are left in suspense until it is too late. The Overlook, like the Maze is a trap. We search for an exit and in panic we are driven only deeper into it's grasp. The Overlook itself becomes a terrifying evil, it's walls closing in on us.
The subliminal flashing of their corpses is what gets me.

What I love about the Shining is that it was not overly dramatized with jump scares. Yes, they put them in it as well as gore. But they let the eerie vibe of the snowstorm and haunted hotel do most of the harrowing work.
Today's horror movies could never, ever compare.

I think that this movie and the shining as a whole is so strikingly scary because it’s not the same kind of horror that we are now used to. Of course that’s not the only reason why it’s scary. The plot is horrifying – the idea of a father going insane and resorting to murdering his own wife and son, as well as everything that happens alongside that. What I mean, though, is that modern horror movies often rely on jumpscares and visual horror, rather than using this kind of psychological horror. In my opinion, psychological horror just hits harder, and makes for way better movies and books.
